What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the abdomen. This treatment involves removing excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. It is particularly popular among women post-pregnancy or those who have undergone significant weight loss, as it helps to restore a smoother, firmer abdomen with flatter contours.
Dr. Geo Tabbal is a board-certified plastic surgeon with specialized fellowship training in aesthetic surgery, bringing extensive expertise to abdominoplasty procedures. He takes a highly individualized approach, tailoring each surgery to align with the unique goals and anatomy of every patient. Patient safety is central to everything he does, and his focus is on achieving outcomes that look naturally refined to enhance the body’s contours while minimizing visible evidence of surgical intervention. Patients from North Dallas communities including Plano, Prosper, Celina, and throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, travel to Frisco to have Dr. Tabbal perform their surgeries.

Developing a Customized Tummy Tuck Treatment Plan
Your consultation with Dr. Tabbal begins with a conversation. He’ll take the time to understand what aspects of your midsection concern you and what results you’re hoping to see. After a thorough physical evaluation and a clear picture of your objectives, he’ll craft a personalized abdominoplasty plan designed to address your specific needs with the highest standard of safety and effectiveness. In many cases, this plan will incorporate liposuction as a complementary technique, a common pairing with tummy tuck surgery that helps both refine and enhance the overall outcome, while making the abdomen harmonious with the rest of your midsection.
Once you’re comfortable with the recommended surgical plan, Dr. Tabbal will walk you through his surgical technique in detail, including what recovery will look like, potential risks to be aware of, and other procedure-specific considerations. He’s eager to answer any questions you may have and wants to make sure you leave your consultation feeling fully informed. When you’re ready to proceed, our team will help you lock in a surgery date and guide you through pre-operative preparation, which may include dietary recommendations such as increasing protein intake to support healing and minimize the risk of potential complications. Financing and payment options can also be explored at this stage.
From your very first appointment through your final follow-up visit, Dr. Tabbal and our entire team are committed to making your tummy tuck journey as seamless and comfortable as possible. We take pride in standing by our patients every step of the way, helping you reach your aesthetic goals while providing the attentive, compassionate care you deserve.

Who Is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
An abdominoplasty is often ideal for people who are otherwise healthy and have relatively normal body weight, but have a persistent excess of skin around the abdomen, lax abdominal muscles, and an abdominal contour that hides the improvement or positive change made with diet and exercise. In many cases, the abdomen protrudes disproportionately, usually after pregnancy or a significant amount of weight has been lost.
Patients who are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, or women who may wish to become pregnant in the future, are generally encouraged to delay tummy tuck surgery until those milestones have passed. Following a thorough assessment of your abdominal anatomy, Dr. Tabbal will recommend the most appropriate approach for your situation—whether that’s a full abdominoplasty, an extended abdominoplasty, or a mini tummy tuck. Each of these techniques can be paired with liposuction to further optimize your results.
During your consultation, Dr. Tabbal can evaluate your needs and goals to determine procedure candidacy.

Panniculectomy vs. Tummy Tuck
A panniculectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove the overhanging apron of excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen, a condition that commonly develops following significant weight loss. It is typically recommended when the volume of redundant tissue is severe enough to cause ongoing discomfort such as chronic skin irritation or limitations in movement. However, a panniculectomy differs meaningfully from an abdominoplasty in its scope. It does not address the upper abdominal area, nor does it repair or tighten weakened or separated abdominal muscles. Both of these are key components of a tummy tuck. For patients seeking meaningful aesthetic improvement of the entire abdominal region after weight loss, abdominoplasty is generally considered the more comprehensive and effective solution.
Dr. Tabbal feels that a panniculectomy is best suited for patients who seek functional improvements in their life, despite insurance companies being notorious for not covering this procedure. An abdominoplasty can also remove the excess skin that is removed during a panniculectomy but doesn’t stop there—it treats the contour of the entire abdomen and flanks, focusing on the aesthetic outcome that most patients desire.
What Are the Different Types of Tummy Tucks?

- Traditional (full) tummy tuck – This approach can address concerns above and below the belly button, both excess skin and fat, and repairs separated abdominal muscles (also known as rectus diastasis).
- Extended abdominoplasty – An extended abdominoplasty is a more comprehensive version of a standard tummy tuck that addresses not only the front of the abdomen, but also the flanks and lateral waist. Compared with a traditional abdominoplasty, the incision is longer, extending past the hips toward the lower back, allowing for more skin and fat can be removed from the abdomen, love-handle area, and side waist. This procedure can create a more defined waist contour and narrow the waist. It is different from a circumferential body lift, which also treats the back and seeks to elevate the buttocks.
- Mini tummy tuck – A mini tummy tuck is designed to target the excess skin and fat in only the lower abdomen (below the belly button). Typically, the incision is shorter in length and there is no incision around your belly button.
- Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck (also called a vertical abdominoplasty) – This is a variation of a standard abdominoplasty designed for patients with significant excess skin in both the horizontal and vertical directions, most commonly after massive weight loss. By adding a vertical incision in the midline, from the lower abdomen up toward the sternum, a fleur-de-lis can remove skin left-to-right and top-to-bottom.
- Reverse tummy tuck – A reverse tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgical procedure that tightens loose skin in the upper abdomen (above the belly button). In a reverse tummy tuck, Dr. Tabbal makes an incision within the crease of the breasts so that the scar is all but hidden by the natural fold of the breast or a bra, and then removes loose skin from the upper abdomen, pulling it upward. This procedure can be ideal for patients who have sagging or loose skin only in the upper abdomen or for patients who have previously had a lower tummy tuck but still have excess skin above the navel.
Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction
A tummy tuck and liposuction are fundamentally different but complementary procedures. In fact, Dr. Tabbal often combines liposuction with a tummy tuck to enhance the results. These are some of the key differences between a tummy tuck and liposuction:
Tummy Tuck
- Repairs and tightens separated muscles
- Removes excess skin
- Requires a horizontal incision
Liposuction
- Removes stubborn fat pockets
- Doesn’t address concerns about excess skin
- Removes fat in the midsection and other areas of the body
- Requires small, nearly invisible incisions
Abdominoplasty corrects not just loose skin, but also separated abdominal muscles – a condition called diastasis recti.
What Are the Details of a Tummy Tuck Procedure?
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between two and three hours from start to finish. This procedure begins with a low incision along the abdomen, through which the abdominal muscles (above and/or below the navel) are tightened and any redundant skin is removed. When excess fat is also present, Dr. Tabbal frequently employs the SAFELipo® technique to further refine the contour of the area. This advanced liposuction approach works through a process of separating, aspirating, and equalizing fatty tissue, enabling more precise and thorough fat removal while reducing the risk of irregular contours in the treated area. After sculpting is complete, the skin is gently repositioned, and the incision is closed using specialized progressive-tension sutures to help minimize the risk for seromas and take tension off of the scar. Throughout this process, Dr. Tabbal pays close attention to the appearance of the navel, being careful to avoid excessive tension or over-tightening of the skin—a detail that is essential to achieving a natural-looking belly button and a smooth, balanced abdominal profile. This commitment to a refined, understated result is reflected throughout his before-and-after gallery.
What Can I Expect During Recovery from Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Following surgery, patients are fitted with a compression garment to help reduce swelling and provide support to the abdomen during the healing process. Drain placement is not a universal requirement, and Dr. Tabbal is experienced with the drainless tummy tuck technique and applies it selectively for appropriate candidates. Whether a drain is needed is best assessed during your consultation; however, in cases where liposuction is performed concurrently, Dr. Tabbal typically recommends the use of drains as a precaution against seromas, which are pockets of fluid that can occasionally accumulate after surgery.
When drains are used, they are usually removed within a week or less. Today’s newer drain designs are associated with minimal discomfort, even at the time of removal.
Some bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the abdominal area is normal in the early stages of recovery, but these effects will gradually subside. Severe pain is uncommon, largely due to Dr. Tabbal’s precise surgical approach, and any discomfort that does occur can be effectively managed with appropriate medication. Dr. Tabbal also offers a long-acting numbing agent to make your recovery as painless as possible. This medication is a recent advancement that can provide meaningful pain relief for up to three days following the procedure.
The timeline for returning to daily activities will vary based on the type and extent of the surgery. Most patients are able to work from home and resume desk work within one to two weeks, while more physically demanding tasks should be avoided for a longer period to allow the body to heal fully.
Dr. Tabbal and his team provide thorough post-operative care and conduct regular follow-up appointments to support patients throughout every stage of recovery. Detailed written instructions will be provided from the start, although Dr. Tabbal is always present and available to guide your healing, and address any questions or concerns that arise along the way.
Recovery Timeline
While patient experiences can vary, expect recovery to progress according to the following general timeline:
- Drains removed – 3 to 10 days
- Return to non-strenuous work – 2 weeks
- Stand upright – 7 to 10 days
- Resume light exercise – 3 to 4 weeks
- Stop wearing compression garments – 3 to 4 weeks
- Resume strenuous exercise – 6 to 8 weeks
- Results become visible – 4 to 6 months
- Achieve final results – 1 year
As part of Dr. Tabbal’s commitment to optimize the recovery from body contouring surgery, he has established a partnership with a dedicated group of healthcare professionals known as The PostOP Collective, who provide personalized, one-on-one post-operative nursing care in the comfort of your own home or within the privacy of a luxury hotel setting in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Will My Tummy Tuck Scars Be Obvious?
Scarring is an inherent and unavoidable part of any abdominoplasty procedure. That said, the incision is intentionally placed low on the abdomen so that it can be easily concealed beneath most clothing, including a wide range of bikini and underwear styles. Beyond thoughtful incision placement and precise wound closure, Dr. Tabbal provides every patient with detailed post-operative guidance on how to properly care for their incision as it heals and matures, all with the goal of minimizing the scar’s long-term visibility. In practice, Dr. Tabbal has found that patients tend to give very little thought to their scar once they see their transformed abdominal contour and the aesthetic improvement far outweighs any concerns about the incision itself.

Can You Get Pregnant After a Tummy Tuck?
From a purely medical standpoint, there is generally no health-related reason why a tummy tuck cannot be performed before a patient has children. However, Dr. Tabbal typically advises patients to wait until their family is complete before pursuing abdominoplasty. The primary reason for this recommendation is that a subsequent pregnancy will re-stretch the skin and cause rectus diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles). In most cases, this will mean that patients will need to have additional surgery in order to recapture the firmer, flatter abdominal contour that their original procedure produced.
As for any health concerns related to becoming pregnant after a tummy tuck, most patients have little cause for worry. Outside of the aesthetic considerations already mentioned, pregnancy following abdominoplasty is not expected to pose any medical risks to the mother or the baby.
Can I Get a Non-Surgical Tummy Tuck?
While a number of non-surgical treatments exist that may be able to modestly improve the appearance of the abdomen, none come close to a tummy tuck. Procedures such as laser skin tightening and CoolSculpting® are sometimes marketed as alternatives to abdominoplasty, but they typically fall short in several important ways. These treatments are unable to physically remove excess skin, and their capacity to reduce fat and firm the remaining skin is nowhere close to being comparable to an abdominoplasty. Perhaps most significantly, they cannot address weakened or separated abdominal muscles—a contributing factor to the abdominal bulging that many tummy tuck patients present with.
In short, non-surgical options can serve as useful complements to abdominoplasty and may even help enhance surgical results in certain cases, but they are not typically a viable substitute when the goal is to remove excess skin and fat and restore the integrity of the abdominal wall.
Additional Tummy Tuck Frequently Asked Questions
How safe is a tummy tuck?
When performed by a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Tabbal, abdominoplasty is regarded as a safe and well-established procedure. As with any surgery, however, there are inherent risks to be mindful of, including the possibility of infection, bruising, swelling, or bleeding. Dr. Tabbal’s extensive training and hands-on experience equip him to apply the surgical techniques and safety protocols necessary to minimize these risks and reduce the likelihood of complications. Every patient also receives a thorough, individualized discussion of the potential risks and benefits before any decision to move forward with surgery is made.
All procedures performed by Dr. Tabbal take place in surgical facilities accredited by The Joint Commission, an organization recognized for its rigorous patient safety and care standards. Anesthesia is administered exclusively by board-certified MD anesthesiologists, providing expert oversight and monitoring from start to finish.
What is a seroma after tummy tuck surgery?
Many body contouring surgical procedures, like a tummy tuck, have the risk for a seroma, which is a collection of fluid that gathers beneath the skin. Seromas may resemble a cyst or localized swelling and can sometimes resolve naturally as the fluid is reabsorbed by the body. However, because they carry a risk of infection, seromas should be drained whenever they occur to prevent potential complications.
How can I reduce swelling after a tummy tuck?
Swelling around the incision and surrounding tissue is a normal and expected side effect of abdominoplasty, and it is not uncommon for it to persist for several weeks after surgery. There are several steps patients can take to help manage and reduce swelling during recovery, including wearing the recommended compression garment for the prescribed duration, incorporating lymphatic massage, staying well hydrated, limiting sodium intake, and allowing the body adequate rest. Dr. Tabbal will provide each patient with thorough, personalized post-operative instructions that outline these and other recovery guidelines in greater detail.
How long do I need to wear compression garments after a tummy tuck?
Following a tummy tuck, patients are typically advised to wear their compression garment continuously (day and night, except when showering) for several weeks, though the exact duration may vary from patient to patient. Consistent use of the garment serves several important purposes: it encourages healthy circulation, helps keep swelling under control, protects the incisions as they heal, reduces the risk of fluid accumulation, and supports the newly shaped abdominal contours. Dr. Tabbal will offer individualized guidance tailored to each patient’s needs and will monitor their healing progress throughout the recovery period to adjust recommendations as appropriate.
What disqualifies a patient from a tummy tuck?
Abdominoplasty may not be the right choice for patients who still have a significant amount of weight to lose, are planning a future pregnancy, smoke and are unable to stop before and after surgery, cannot arrange adequate time away from work or daily responsibilities for recovery, or have an underlying health condition that could make surgery inadvisable. If you’re unsure whether you’re a good candidate, Dr. Tabbal welcomes the opportunity to meet with you for a personal consultation to help determine the best path forward.
At what age should individuals not have a tummy tuck?
Abdominoplasty can be a viable option for physically and mentally healthy adults across a wide range of ages. It is worth noting that as we get older, the recovery process may take somewhat longer and the likelihood of certain complications can be modestly elevated. Dr. Tabbal will work with each patient individually to establish realistic expectations based on their specific circumstances and overall health.
What happens to my belly button during a tummy tuck?
Once the navel has been freed from the surrounding abdominal tissue, it can be carefully sutured into a newly created opening in the tightened skin, repositioning it in a natural and aesthetically pleasing location. Many patients are delighted to discover that a more refined, rejuvenated belly button is one of the welcome additional benefits of their tummy tuck outcome.
How many sizes can I drop after tummy tuck surgery?
Although the actual change in body weight following a tummy tuck is generally modest, most patients find they drop two to three clothing sizes and notice that their overall appearance gives the impression of meaningful weight loss once they have fully recovered.
The partnership you forge with Dr. Tabbal continues long after your operation. He is the one taking you to the recovery room and speaking with your loved ones immediately following surgery, and he will be the one calling you that first night to make sure you’re settling in comfortably during the initial recovery, or healing phase.
After a tummy tuck, it is important not to get your heart rate elevated or to strain your midsection in any way. Obviously, that means you’ll need to temporarily refrain from things like lifting or reaching for anything greater than a few pounds, or exercising vigorously. Initially after your surgery, you won’t be able to walk fully upright, although walking around after the procedure is important for your circulation and to reduce the risk of blood clots.
Lastly, Dr. Tabbal stresses the importance for his patients to call him throughout the healing process to discuss any concerns that they may have. As one of his patients, you will have follow-up visits following your surgery but, of course, what matters most is that you always feel confident, comfortable, and safe during your recovery.
